Providence expected to ask school day reduction for storms

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The Providence School Board may ask the state for permission to trim the school year by a day because of recent snowstorms.

The board is expected to vote Monday night to seek the reduction.

School district spokeswoman Christina O’Reilly tells the station that would be followed by a petition to the state Council on Elementary and Secondary Education.

She said the proposal would “buy us back a little bit of breathing room” after six snow days.

The Providence school year is to end June 26. Any more snow days could push classes into the week of the Fourth of July.

Schools are required to be open at least 180 days, but can ask for emergency reductions. Providence is citing the governor’s Jan. 27 state of emergency declaration.
