Death toll from Iranian protests surpasses 2,000, activists say, as chaos recalls 1979 revolution

Activists say the death toll from nationwide protests in Iran has surpassed 2,000 people. This level of violence around protests hasn’t been seen in Iran in decades. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, which has been accurate in previous unrest in recent years, gave the latest toll. It says most of the dead over more than two weeks of protests were protesters and 135 were government-affiliated. With the internet down in Iran, gauging the demonstrations from abroad is difficult. The agency warns that the death toll will rise: “We’re horrified but we still think the number is conservative.”

The Latest: Minnesota prosecutor asks public to share Renee Good shooting evidence with her office

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty has asked the public to send any video or other evidence in the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis directly to her office. Moriarty said Friday that although her office has collaborated effectively with the FBI in past cases, the decision to keep the investigation into Good's killing by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in federal hands concerns her. A day after Good was killed in Minneapolis, federal immigration agents shot and wounded two people outside a hospital in Portland on Thursday. The shooting drew hundreds of protesters to the ICE building at night, and Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield vowed to investigate.

The Latest: ICE officer who shot Renee Good identified in court records as Jonathan Ross

A day after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed 37-year-old mother of three Renee Good as she tried to drive away on a snowy Minneapolis street, tensions have remained high. Dozens of protesters vented their outrage Thursday. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has not publicly identified the officer who shot Good. But she spoke of an incident last June in which the same officer was injured when he was dragged by another driver’s fleeing vehicle. Court records from that case identify the officer as Jonathan Ross. Meanwhile, the FBI's office in Portland, Oregon, says two people were shot and wounded Thursday by federal immigration authorities in the city.

MN state investigators say they can't access ICE shooting evidence after FBI takes case

The head of Minnesota’s state investigations agency says the U.S. attorney’s office has barred it from taking part in the investigation into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer’s fatal shooting of a Minneapolis woman. Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans said in a statement Thursday that after the agency consulted with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, the U.S. attorney’s office and the FBI following Wednesday's shooting of 37-year-old mother of three Renee Good, “it was decided that the BCA Force Investigations Unit would conduct a joint investigation with the FBI.” He said the FBI informed the BCA later Wednesday that the U.S. attorney’s office had changed the plan.
