Bovino to leave Minneapolis as Trump reshuffles the leadership of his immigration crackdown

Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino is expected to leave Minneapolis on Tuesday as the Trump administration reshuffles leadership of its immigration enforcement operation and scales back the federal presence after a second fatal shooting in the city by federal officers. A person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press that Bovino is among the federal agents leaving Minneapolis. The person was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the operation and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity. President Donald Trump said he was placing his border czar, Tom Homan, in charge of the mission. Homan will report directly to the White House.

Man is shot and killed during Minneapolis immigration crackdown, National Guard activated

Federal immigration officers have shot and killed a man in Minneapolis, drawing hundreds of protesters in a city already shaken by another fatal shooting weeks earlier. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said a 37-year-old man was killed Saturday but declined to identify him. He added that information about what led up to the shooting was limited. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that federal officers were conducting an operation as part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and fired “defensive shots” after a man with a handgun approached them. O’Hara said police believe the man was a “lawful gun owner with a permit to carry.”

Police arrest protesters at airport as Minnesota gears up for anti-immigration enforcement protest

Police arrested anti-immigration enforcement demonstrators at Minnesota's largest airport after they overstepped their permit, officials said, as Arctic temperatures seized the state and others protesting the Trump administration’s crackdown urged people to stay away from work, school and shops.  One of the faith groups organizing the protest said Friday “roughly 100 clergy” were arrested. Metropolitan Airports Commission spokesman Jeff Lea said the protesters were arrested outside the main terminal of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport when they went beyond what their permit for demonstrating stipulated and began affecting airline operations. Meanwhile, groups are asking Minnesotans to stay home in protest at immigration enforcement operations in the state

Immigration officers assert sweeping power to enter homes without a judge's warrant, memo says

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement memo obtained by The Associated Press reveals that the agency allows immigration officers to forcibly enter homes to make arrests without a judicial warrant. This change reverses previous guidance and raises concerns about constitutional protections against illegal searches. The memo, signed by ICE’s acting director, states that administrative warrants are sufficient for forced entry if there’s a final order of removal. This policy could face legal challenges and criticism from advocacy groups. Whistleblower Aid, representing two government officials, describes the directive as seemingly unconstitutional and a significant shift in arrest powers. The Associated Press obtained the memo and whistleblower complaint from an official in Congress.

Luigi Mangione’s federal death penalty trial could start before the end of the year

Luigi Mangione’s federal death penalty trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson could begin before the end of the year.  U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett said Friday that she expects Mangione’s trial to begin in December or possibly January 2027 if the death penalty is still on the table. If not, she said, Mangione could stand trial in October. Either way, Garnett said, she expects jury selection to begin around Sept. 8. The judge said she would rule at a later date on the defense’s requests to prevent prosecutors from seeking the death penalty, throw out some charges and exclude certain evidence.

The Latest: Senate advances resolution to limit Trump’s ability to attack Venezuela

The Senate has advanced a resolution that would limit President Donald Trump’s ability to conduct further attacks against Venezuela, sounding a note of disapproval for his expanding ambitions in the Western Hemisphere. Five Republicans backed the resolution, and more war powers votes are looming on Greenland and other countries where Trump has expressed military ambitions. As Trump asserts a new world order guided by military force and economic power — and calls for a massive increase in military spending to confront these “dangerous times” — U.S. allies are insisting that global stability depends on following international law.
